A Theatre Is Born
Built in 1937, the Historic Serf Theatre stands as one of Las Vegas, New Mexico’s most enduring cultural landmarks. Located along the Santa Fe Trail National Scenic Byway, the theatre has served generations as a place of entertainment, gathering, and shared experience — evolving with the community while preserving its original spirit.The Golden Age of Cinema (1937–1950s)
Originally constructed by Fox Intermountain Theatres, the Serf Theatre opened during the golden age of American cinema. Designed to impress, the venue featured striking architectural details, hand-painted murals, and a grand auditorium that reflected the optimism and artistry of the era.
For decades, the Serf Theatre was a centerpiece of downtown Las Vegas — hosting film premieres, community events, and unforgettable nights out for local families.
Preservation and Recognition
As entertainment habits evolved in the late 20th century, many historic theatres across the country faced decline. The Serf Theatre was no exception, eventually closing its doors after years of service.
Yet even during its quiet years, the building’s architectural beauty and cultural importance remained undeniable — waiting for the right moment to be restored and reimagined.
Restoration & Renewal (2012–2014)
In 2012, the Serf Theatre was purchased by the Romero and Moore family, who undertook an extensive restoration with a clear purpose: to preserve the theatre’s historic character while adapting it for modern use.
Careful attention was given to maintaining original design elements — including murals, finishes, and structural details — while updating the space with modern amenities, improved acoustics, and flexible layouts suitable for today’s events.
In August 2014, the Historic Serf Theatre reopened its doors — not simply as a restored building, but as a revitalized destination.
